The
University of Guelph international
and NHL size arenas are a 2 minute walk from the dormitory.
The City of Guelph and the University of Guelph offer the finest training
facilities in Canada! This area of Ontario is steeped in hockey tradition.
Over the years some of the top professional players in North America and
Europe have developed in this "hot-bed" of hockey talent.
Our home, the University of Guelph, has one of the most outstanding ice
facilities in the country. Its twin arena offers both Olympic and Regulation
size ice surfaces. The STARS residence is a 2 minute walk to the arena
facility. The living quarters are totally self contained, offering carpeted
rooms, game rooms and lounges, lecture facilities, cafeteria, tuck shop
and pro shop. The nearby athletic facilities are convenient for dryland
training and recreation activities including swimming, in-line skating,
soccer, ball games, Power Hour, Team Challenge and much more.
Guelph is conveniently located in the heart of the most highly developed
region in Canada, just 45 miles west of Toronto, 180 miles from Detroit
and 90 miles from Buffalo. Major airlines service Toronto on a regular
basis. If you are a one week camper and want to qualify for an air-fare
discount that requires a Saturday night stay, just choose our Stayover
option and depart from Camp on Sunday. An available shuttle service connects
Guelph with Toronto International Airport less than 45 miles away. STARS
staff will personally meet the campers' flights and ensure that their
connection is made.

Focus on the specific skills that will take you to the next level of
play. Improve your stride with daily power skating sessions. You can not
be a better hockey player unless your skating improves. Increase your
ability to stick handle through traffic and shoot on net. Shooting drills
on and off the ice will make your shot stronger and more accurate!
Learn to execute the wrist shot, snapshot, slapshot, rebound and backhand
shot. Repetition of these skills every day through innovative drills will
make you a stronger, faster skater and a real offensive threat!

The smart player knows when to use a body check versus a poke check or
a sweep check. Learn the strategy and mechanics behind the ability to
secure possession of the puck from your opponent. These skills are necessary
from Mite to Midget and High School play. Checking strategy relates to
how smart you are in your movement on the ice as a forward or a defenseman.
Scoring techniques will include working on every type of shot, to improve
both your strength and accuracy. Learning and practicing both of these
skills each day will make you a smarter and more effective player with
and without the puck!

The game of hockey is played in your head and heart as well as on the
ice. Learn the skill of anticipating where to move when you are on the
ice in an offensive and defensive position. You don't have time to decide
what you should do and where you should move in an instant as a play takes
shape. Understand how to play the odds and angles. The program highlights
below will illustrate the skills you will concentrate on as a Forward
or Defenseman.

The goaltender...the most important person on the ice yet the least instructed
player in the sport. STARS has developed the most innovative goaltending
program in North America, one that will significantly increase your ability
to stop the puck. STARS instructors do not teach just one style of goaltending,
but rather they analyze your style and work with you on an individual
basis to improve your moves in the net, not change them.
