As
the center of state and county government, Madison has a reputation
for political awareness and progressive leadership.
State government
activity centers in and around Madison's majestic
State Capitol building, and the area annually
attracts hundreds of legislators and lobbyists.
Madison's own government consists of a
mayor-aldermanic system.
Government
is an important business in Madison. About
one-third of Greater Madison's workforce--or more
than 68,000 residents are employed in local,
state and federal government jobs. The University
of Wisconsin alone provides over 30,000 of those
jobs.
