ARTS

The arts are flourishing in Madison. The Madison Civic Center serves as Madison's center for the arts, with the Madison Art Center, the elegant 2,200-seat Oscar Mayer Theatre and the more intimate Isthmus Playhouse, home to Madison Repertory Theatre, Madison's first equity theater.

At least a dozen other local organizations produce live theater in the Madison area. Broom Street Theater is one of the country's oldest experimental theaters and one of the best. The University of Wisconsin-Madison, Edgewood College and Madison Area Technical College all host a variety of theatrical experiences, and, less than an hour away in Spring Green, the American Players Theatre company performs Shakespeare and other classic theater under the summer skies. Several dance organizations provide another kind of live theater experience, with everything from classical to jazz to tap dancing.

Madison is always alive with the sound of music! Stroll down State Street and listen to the street musicians. Attend a concert of the Madison Symphony Orchestra at the Civic Center. Walk up Bascom Hill to hear the ringing of the Carillon Tower bells. Enjoy Madison's very own Civic Opera--rare in a city this size. Spend an old-fashioned summer evening picnicking on the Capitol lawn listening to the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra's Concerts on the Square. A variety of live music venues provide music and dancing every night of the week.

The visual arts are showcased through the many galleries and museums that highlight a range of art created by international, national and local artists. Major art galleries include the Elvehjem (pronounced LVM) Museum of Art on the UW campus and the Madison Art Center, and exhibits range from the fine arts to historical relics of the past to hands-on opportunitites for learning for children of all ages.
