Henry Vilas Zoo: The Wildest Place in Town

ReZOOvenation

Our eight-year, $10+ million project to renovate the oldest part of Henry Vilas Zoo!

In 1993 we started something very special at Henry Vilas Zoo: A major renovation project the likes of which the zoo has never seen! The oldest part of the zoo - the northwest quadrant built between 1915 and 1929 - was in desperate need of renovation. With enthusiastic encouragement from Dane County and the public, ReZOOvenation was underway!

Funded 50 percent by the Zoological Society, 40 percent by Dane County, and 10 percent by the City of Madison, ReZOOvenation has so far produced:
  • A new Discovering Primates Complex in 1995

  • A new all-outdoor Big Cat Complex in 1997
  Lions

  • A new concessions-
    restroom-gift shop complex
    in 1997

In summer 1998, we began the renovation of the 1915 Bird House into a Visitor Center followed by construction of a new Tropical Forest Aviary in 1999. We'll finish ReZOOvenation in 2001 with construction of a new Small Mammal Exhibit.
