Matt Joseph was born
in December, 1944 in New York City and grew up there and in Bennington,
Vermont. He attended Deerfield Academy and the University of Chicago and
did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin--Madison in U.S. History.
He is married and has three children, ages: 17, 26 and 29.
Matt has taught college
classes on eight campuses of the University of Wisconsin System and was
employed as an Assistant Professor of History and Program Coordinator
at the U.W.--Extension from 1971 through 1983. He continues to teach ad
hoc classes in the V.W. System.
Matt's passion for
automobiles and automotive history dates from the 1950s, when he began
collecting and restoring cars. Since 1983 he has published over 450 feature
articles on a wide variety of automotive and related topics in several
automotive trade, consumer, travel, and general periodicals and newspapers.
His recent book, The Standard Guide to Automotive Restoration was
published by Krause Publications in 1992. He is currently working on a
sequel.
Matt is a contributing
editor of Skinned Knuckles magazine and has written monthly articles
on car restoration for that publication since 1983. He also wrote a monthly
column for Cars & Parts magazine and was Associate Editor of
C&P from 1987 to 1996. His automotive writing covers a wide
variety of topics: industry economics, technical innovation, biography,
history, and product: reviews. He writes regularly for a local newspaper
and for a wire service. Matt is also a member of the Antique Automobile
Club of America's Automobile Industry Centennial Committee.
Matt served on the
Board of Directors of the Society o' Automotive Historians, Inc. and chaired
that group's publications awards committee from 1981 through 1989. In
1989 he was elected to a two year term as President of the Society, after
which he was elected to a three year term on the SAH Board. He is also
a former Board member and past president of the Wisconsin Chapter of SAH.
He belongs numerous automobile and automotive history organizations.
Matt's particular
automotive marque interests are early Lincolns and postwar Aston Martins.
He has addressed numerous
groups on varied automotive topics. He has worked as an industry consultant
and has provided consulting services to corporate and government clients
on various aspects of automotive marketing, advertising, design, purchasing
and policy.
For almost six years
Matt co-hosted the popular weekly radio program, About Cars, on
the 12 - station Wisconsin Public Radio Network, at which point he was
fired. He then moved the program to a Madison commercial station, WTDY-AM
1480, which plans to syndicate the new program, All About Cars,
throughout Wisconsin in early 1997.
Matt has been a guest
on regional and national radio and television talk shows, has worked on
many television production assignments, and is a guest commentator on
and consultant to a Madison T.V. station.
In addition to writing
and speaking activities, Matt has sold rights to his automotive inventions.
He owns and operates a small automotive research and consulting firm,
MATTCO, located in southern Wisconsin, near Madison.
